Garage Organizing Methodology

Step 1) First things first. Get some good snacks, drinks, and music to listen to.

Step 2) On a notepad write down a list of 5 or so goals you have with organizing your garage.

1. Dust the cobwebs

      2. Organize my power tools

      3. Create a battery charging station

      4. Have an open workspace

      5. Get a pegboard on a wall to use to organize my garden tools

          Etc.

Step 3) Keep this list near you at all times. Throughout the sorting process, you will most likely be coming up with ideas to better organize your items, such as buying small bins to put your screws and nails, or maybe you need more boxes to hold your paint supplies.  Whenever you come up with an idea add it to your goal list.

Step 4) If you can, dedicate a clear space in your driveway to use as a sorting space, preferably your entire driveway.

Step 5) Move your trash bin and recycle bin to an easily accessible area in your sorting area.

Step 6) Designate where you want items in your garage to go:

1. Garden tools

      2. Car maintenance

      3. Food storage

      4. Cleaning supplies

      5. Pile of items to bring somewhere else, like the yard or house

          Etc.

NOTE) Every time you pick up an item to sort it, you will be asking yourself the question “Do I want to keep this?” If yes, then you will put it in the appropriate area.  If the answer is no, then it goes into 1 of 3 places on your driveway: in the trash, in the recycling, or in a pile of items to give away.

Step 7) Now you are ready to start organizing items.  First, we are going to manage larger items. If you have boxes and containers with smaller items inside them that need sorting (such as a container with different screws and nails that need to be sorted) put these containers in a designated area on your driveway.  You will organize each of these containers later.

For large items such as sorted boxes, rakes, ladders, etc., move these to the area that you have designated them to go (where you want them to be when your garage is completely organized). This process may be slow, but the key is not to spend too much time thinking about an individual item.  Give yourself 30-60 seconds to come up with a decision for each item.  Hopefully, it takes only a few seconds to decide for most items.

Step 8) Once you are completed with the larger items it's time to move the smaller items into their places such as paint cans, small hand tools, duct tape, etc.  Organize these items into their appropriate location.

Step 9) Look through your goal list to see if you can do any small goals right away without needing to leave your home.

STEP 10) Give away all the items in your giveaway pile.

Step 11) One by one organize all the boxes and containers with smaller items inside them that need sorting.  These containers should be sorted out one at a time so that you can stay focused on each one as a separate goal.

Once you are completed Step 11 you should have all of your garage organized. Congratulations!!
